Nottingham University's Energy Technology Research Institute specifically heads up carbon abatement in fossil energy production from which a world class industrial doctoral centre in clean fossil energy and carbon capture and storage has arisen.

Both Universities of Loughborough and Nottingham are producing leading technologies in terms of increased efficiency in power generation from fossil fuels.

The Universities of Loughborough and Birmingham appear to be the leading universities developing high temperature and high pressure materials and technologies for new generation coal-based power plants of the future.
